47 seek principal post at HJHS

Superintendent Dee Dee Jones said she has 47 applications for the vacant principal’s job at Hartselle Junior High and the number could go higher.

She made the announcement last Wednesday morning after the school board approved a personnel package that included nine resignations, three retirements, five transfers and 13 employments.

Hartselle was expected to non-renew the contracts of four non-tenured teachers, but the teachers opted to resign before the board meeting, school officials said.

Jones said the school system still has several teaching vacancies.

The district is looking for a junior high principal because Robbie Smith resigned in March to become principal at Orange Beach Middle Schools in Baldwin County.

Bob Young, a retired Hartselle administrator, has been serving as interim principal.

Jones said she will likely interview and recommend someone for the position during a meeting in June.

Hartselle’s principals are contract employees and their salaries are negotiated, according to Chief Financial Officer Bradley Colburn.

Board member Randy Sparkman said interest in administrative positions in Hartselle is always high, and he’s not surprised at the number of people who have applied for the Hartselle Junior High job.

“We have a good school system,” he said.
