Area schools wrap up spring football
Spring football has come to a close for five area schools, and now they turn their attention to summer camps and workouts.
In Class 6A, Hartselle’s new head coach, Bo Culver, looks to build upon the foundation of success the Tigers experienced under Coach Godsey. Culver will be replacing 23 seniors off the 2018 regional championship team, including quarterback Luke Godsey and running back Keondre Swoopes. Hartselle will open the 2019 season Aug. 23rd at Austin.
In Class 5A, Coach Geoff Walters has a veteran team with seven starters returning on both sides of the ball, including his starting quarterback, Patrick Johnson, who led the Patriots to the playoffs for the first time since 1999. Kicker Thomas Gilbert is a newcomer to the team, and Walters said Gilbert could be a real scoring weapon for the Patriots.
The Patriots will be partnering with other area teams in a couple of days for a community service project in the morning followed by scrimmages in the afternoon. Walters said his goals for the summer are to grow depth, to continue strength gains in the weight room and continue to get in shape for the upcoming season.
In Class 4A, Danville and Priceville entered spring practice looking to continue building the foundation for their programs.
Priceville finished last year with a 2-8 record and will be replacing 10 seniors off that team, including starting quarterback Brock Payne. Coach Jason Simmons had Wyatt Hurt, last year’s backup, taking snaps with the first-team offense during the spring.
Priceville will open the 2019 season Aug. 30 on the road at Good Hope.
Danville finished the season 0-10 but has some optimism heading into 2019.
The Hawks are replacing a dozen graduating seniors. Hawks coach Shannon McGregory is looking for a new starting quarterback and rotated four players in the position this spring: Harrison Bates, Jeffrey Kilgore, Hunter Franklin and Madison Academy transfer Luke Nail, who was a two-year starter for the Mustangs.
Danville will open the 2019 season on the road at Falkville Aug. 23.
In 1A, Tyler Mitchell takes over as head coach for the Falkville Blue Devils. He inherits a team that returns five offensive and four defensive starters from last year’s region champion and play-off team. He will be replacing QB Aaron Dove and RB Fred Walls, who were key to last year’s record-setting offense.
Mitchell said several players have stood out during spring practice: Christian Angulo, Brody Lacey and Travis Ricks on offense, plus Wyatt King, Luke Fitzgerald and Mikell Elliot standing out on defense.
Mitchell said his goal for his team this summer is to become more physical, and he said the Blue Devils are headed in the right direction.
The Blue Devils will participate in several 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 events this summer at Dora, at home against Meek, at Russellville and the FCA 7-on-7 camp. They will open fall camp Aug. 5 and kick off the 2019 season at home against Danville Aug. 23.
