The Somerville Playhouse will be hosting an adult throwback prom September 8. The event will host dancing, food, king and queen crowning and other typical prom activities. The event is open to all adults.

Jessica Cotton is one of the owners of the Somerville Playhouse, and said the event is meant to be a night of fun and nostalgia for everyone. “We have had several people ask about doing throwback activities. We wanted to give adults the chance to relive that in a safe and fun environment. We try to be a safe place for everyone,” Cotton said.

The venue will be decorated like a real prom, and will feature throwback foods and activities. Cotton said the food will consist of appetizers and snacks that are themed from the 50’s to current. There will be tang to drink as well as sandwiches themed as ‘yellow submarines’. “We are even going to have a Mash session,” Cotton said.

The event will not have a dress code, and Cotton said that people can come dressed however they prefer. The Somerville Playhouse character Joletta Cotton will be wearing overalls. “Some people will be dressed up and some will be more casual, just however you are comfortable,” Cotton said.

According to Cotton, the Throwback Prom will serve as a way for busy adults to step away from their responsibilities and have fun. “Our tagline for the event has been, ‘The age limit is for anyone that is old enough to have attended a prom and regretted it,” Cotton said.

Even though many of those attending have children or jobs, Cotton said the event serves as a way to enjoy life. “We think it is important that they keep living even though they have kids and are busy now,” Cotton said.

The advanced admission for the prom is $15 per person or $25 per couple. The admission at the door is $20  per person or $35 per couple.
