Wetlands day camp to be held in August

The Morgan County Environmental Education Foundation will hold its annual Wild Wetlands Day Camp Aug. 1. The camp will be open to students 8-13 years old and will take place at the Morgan County Agriculture Services Building.

Students must be pre-registered by July 25 in order to attend.

“This is a great opportunity because it is right before school. It is a nice transition into the school year because it is fun,” said Mallory Lloyd, who coordinates the camp.

Lloyd said that campers will be able to take hikes through the wetlands and identify plants. They will also use nets to pull macroinvertebrates from ponds to test the water quality and have local experts with special presentations about animals and plants.

Campers will also learn to make fires and cook their lunches over them.

“What we do is outdoor dominated. Kids want to bring bug spray and wear shoes and clothes that they don’t mind getting dirty,” Lloyd said.

Lloyd said the camp has been held every summer for about five years, and it gives children a chance to learn something new in a fun environment.

“I love it when the kids learn something new and they’re so excited,” she said. “That is what is so rewarding for us.”

To register a student for camp, contact Lloyd at m.lloyd.education@gmail.com.
