Decatur man killed in single vehicle crash

A vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree head on Sat., Jan. 14, claiming the life of a Decatur man.

The single vehicle wreck occurred on 2nd Street SW near the intersection of Old Moulton Road. The driver was identified as Wendell Ray Shankle, 83, of Decatur.

It is believed Shankle suffered from an unknown medical event and died prior to his vehicle leaving the roadway.

Units from the Decatur Police Department, Decatur Fire and Rescue and First response ambulance were dispatched to the scene. Law enforcement located a Chevrolet SUV off the roadway with front-end damage.

Decatur Fire and Rescue was able to determine that the male was not breathing and had no pulse. Morgan County Coroner Jeff Chunn responded to the scene and the driver was pronounced dead on the scene.

The wreck occurred at approximately 7:23 a.m., on Jan. 14.
