Public transportation change in the making

The North Central Alabama Regional Council of Governments (NARCOG) wants to assume management of public transportation systems in Morgan and Lawrence Counties and the current providers are interested in seeing that happen.

“We took a look at services offered by the Morgan County Area Transportation System (MCATS) and Lawrence County Area Transportation System (LCATS) late last year and discovered a mutual interest in consolidating the management of both systems,” said NARCOG Director Jeff Pruitt.

“The Commissions on Aging in both counties are already operating under the management of NARCOG,” he noted. “Plus, many of the elderly and needy they serve  are users of public transportation.  We see where a consolidation of transportation services can be economically viable for NARCOG as well as both counties.”

Preuitt said the proposed venture would first require approval of both county commissions as well as NARCOG’s board of directors.

The Lawrence County Commission approved the proposal at its last meeting and Morgan County Commissioners will have the opportunity to give it their approval at their next meeting on May 24.

“If Morgan County buys in,” Preuitt said, “our board would consider approval at its next meeting on May 25.”

He said Oct. 1, 2016, is the target date to make the change.
