Neel United Methodist to host Veterans Appreciation Day

Members of Neel UMC will host a Veterans Appreciation Day Sun., May 22, at 10:30 a.m. during the worship service with a fellowship meal afterward. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Belated birthday wishes go out to Paula Maltbie, Charles Riggs, Gary Hill and Larry Hill, all on May 1, Brandon Turrentine on May 2, Luke Campbell, Wes Campbell and Scott LaRoche on May 3, Penny Vest on May 4, Kay Hanline on May 6, Barrett McAbee on May 7, Wylie Reaves and Ada Burch on May 8, Anna Bibb on May 9, Nicholas Pendleton on May 10, Maddie Heard on May 11, Dylan Newell on May 13, Shawn Smith on May 14, John L. Garrison on May 15 and Kristen Sparkman and Kristin Dobbins on May 16.

Happy birthday wishes also go out this week to Frances Riggs on May 18, Dustin Holbert, Isabella Strickland and Mike Hanline on May 19, Kim Parker on May 20 and Mary Terry and Hayden Roden on May 22.

Ronnie and Jenny Asherbranner of the Massey Community attended the North Alabama Tractor Club meeting on Tues., May 10. The group meets monthly, September through May at the Eva Senior Citizen Center. Everyone enjoyed the business session and also a potluck supper.

McKendree UMC members honored mothers Sun., May 8, at the 10:45 a.m. service. Mothers attending received a rose, cookies made by Tammy Vest and craft flowers made by the children’s group at the Celebrate Recovery meeting on Friday night.

Those attending the Weekdays Deli lunch at the Holy Smoke BBQ Wed., May 11 were Dan and Beverly Murphy, Dwight Jones, Larry Anders, Jerri and Junior Hyatt, Kay Farrer, Fred Smith and Neil and Yvonne Quattlebaum. The next lunch for former Deli patrons will be Wed., June 8, at noon at Holy Smoke BBQ. There will be birthday cake for Dwight Jones who has a birthday on June 10.

The Emmanuel Mennonite School picnic was held Fri., May 6, at the school at Massey. The school closing was on Wed., May 4, at noon. Mose Yoder is the administrator of the Mennonite School. Teachers are Floyd Bremmeman and Faith Weaver. The church members, parents and students were all invited to a picnic of grilled chicken, herb potatoes, seven layer salad, finger jello and homemade vanilla ice cream with strawberries. Many participated in the softball or volleyball games after the meal.

Happy wedding anniversary wishes to Charles and Frances Riggs, 37 years on May 4, David and Ruth Sparkman, 55 years on May 6, James and Sandra Roden, 49 years on May 6, Bobby and Nell Dobbins, 35 years on May 11, Jonathan and Shabree King, 1 year on May 12, Jerry and Janet Reynolds, 35 years on May 16, Mike and Kelly McLamb, 15 years on May 19, Jimmy and Aleshia Dobbins, 21 years on May 20, Jeremy and Leslie McAbee, 5 years on May 20, Brad and Kaila Irwin, 6 years on May 22, and Wesley and Skye Maltbie on May 22.

Danville High School graduation will be Mon., May 23, at 7:30 p.m.

Shirley Pope hosted a Mother’s Day lunch May 8, at her home in the Corinth community for Dana Henslee, Aaron Henslee, Mildred Reid, Anita Reid and Christi Hunter.

The Falkville Public Library Summer Reading program will begin Thur., July 7, at 2 p.m. The theme will be “Ready, Set, Read” for ages three and up. All area children and parents are welcome. The opening day will feature information about reading, books to be checked out, library cards issued, story time and refreshments will be served. A puppet show is one of the possible programs. July 14, 21, and 28 are the other program days. There will be prizes and other item giveaways.

Noah Battles led prayers before and after the music and praise service at McKendree UMC’s Celebrate Recovery meeting. Brother Mike Vest and Derrell Shelton lead the Serenity prayer part of the event. After a hotdog, sides and desserts supper, Brother Mike conducted the study on recovery using written materials and discussion. Adults and children then divided into groups. Tammy Vest and Lynn Hogan directed the women, Brother Mike directed the men and Terri Sanford directed the children.

Our thoughts and prayers go out this week for Marty McClellan, Jan Stephens and Mary McCay and sympathy for the family of C. J. Sullins and the Inez Garner Jones family.

“Submerged” is the theme for Mt. Nebo Baptist Church’s vacation Bible school, which will be June 6-10, for ages three through sixth grade. Students will be able to enjoy Bible study, crafts, recreation, music and refreshments each day from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Charlotte is the VBS director. Everyone is welcome to attend. Mt. Nebo is located at Hwy. 157 and Mt. Nebo Road in southwest Massey community. Brother Greg Compton is their pastor.

Congratulations and best wishes go out this week to Justin and Cynthia Jones Turrentine who were united in marriage on April 9, at the Drop Inn Farm in Limestone County by Shady Grove Baptist Church pastor Tom Campbell.
