One play is all it takes. That is what Hartselle Lady Tiger’s centerfielder Kennadi Hogan proved when she blasted a homerun that saved the Tigers season.

Hartselle was in a win or go home situation when they faced off with the Austin Black Bears in the area tournament. The Tigers had already defeated the Bears earlier in the tournament 6-0. However, a loss to Cullman 3-1 would put the Tigers season in jeopardy.

Hartselle would take control of the game in the second inning. Bailey Powell would reach base thanks to an error to start the inning. Gracie Poe would then lay down a sacrifice bunt to move Powell over to second base. Brooklyn Wallace would complete the inning as she singled to left field and give Hartselle the 1-0 lead.

Austin would make up ground though by knocking in two singles to tie the game 1-1.

Hartselle would be put in serious trouble in the fourth inning. Austin would triple to start the inning. The runner would score on a sacrifice fly to give Austin the 2-1 lead. The Black Bears would improve their lead to 3-1 thanks to another single.

Hartselle would go into the sixth inning still down 3-1 and the feeling that their season was slipping away was definitely in the air as Austin had all the momentum.

Hope Cain would single to start the inning but would be out later on a fielder’s choice. Kalli Cartee would reach first but would be thrown out trying to steal second to give Hartselle 2 outs. Powell would once again reach base on an error and Poe would be walked which would bring up centerfielder Kennadi Hogan. With a 2-2 count, Hogan blasted a shot that headed straight for deep right field and went over the fence just barely missing the foul post. With this three run shot the Tigers would take the lead 4-3.

With their renewed energy, the Tigers would tighten up to finish the game. Pitcher Hope Cain, who was in the middle of her second straight game, didn’t allow another hit the rest of the game and the Tigers took the win 4-3.Cain took the pitching win as she allowed 5 hits and 3 runs through 7 innings while pitching 18 first pitch strikes and 8 strikeouts.

With this win Hartselle advanced to regionals which brings them one step closer to making their trip to the state tournament.
