First half scoring drought dooms Tigers

With Christmas now over it was time to get back to the hardwood as the Hartselle Lady Tigers traveled to Decatur for the DOC tournament on Monday December 28. The first game up for the Lady Tigers would be against the 7A school the Spain Park Jaguars.

It was a hard fought defensive battle early on, as the game was tied at just 4-4 with 2 minutes left in the first quarter. Spain Park would get their offense going first by going on a 6-0 run to end the first quarter to take the 10-4 lead.

The defense continued in the second quarter as the first points didn’t come until the 5:10 mark when Spain Park improved their lead to 12-4. The Tiger’s offensive woes continued throughout the second quarter as they failed to put any points on the board for half the quarter. The Tigers first points came halfway through the second quarter when Mary Jane Wooley came up with a shot and free throw to boot to cut the lead to 12-7. This was the Tigers first points since halfway through the first quarter. The Tiger’s defense played strong throughout the whole first half but began to break a little at the end as Spain Park began to pull ahead. Meanwhile, Wooley proved to be the Tiger’s only answer as she tacked on six more free throws to keep Hartselle in the game. Wooley scored 9 of the Tiger’s 10 points in the second quarter as Hartselle trailed Spain Park 25-14 at halftime.

Hartselle started out much stronger in the second half as Mariah Taylor reeled off five straight points to cut the lead to 25-19. Taylor would also tack on a breakaway steal and layup to cut the lead even shorter at 27-23. The third quarter continued to go back and forth with Spain Park staying just 4-5 points ahead. A key three pointer by Maggie Anderson cut the lead to 36-32 when it seemed like the Jaguars were beginning to break away. At the end of the third quarter Hartselle had cut the lead, that was 11 at halftime, to 38-34.

In the fourth quarter, it looked like Spain Park was going to seal the game when the Jaguars went up 48-40 after a controversial foul. With not much time left, the Tiger’s chances were slipping but they weren’t done just yet. Five points by Anna Stinson would cut the lead to 50-45 but it wouldn’t be enough. Spain Park would hold on to win the game 52-45

Player of the game: Mary Jane Wooley. The Tiger’s offense struggled in the first half with just 14 points total and just four in the first quarter. The Tigers scored 10 points in the second quarter and nine of those came from Wooley with 7 of them being free throw shots. If it had not been for Wooley’s drawing fouls and perfect free throw percentage in the second quarter this game might have gotten out of control for the Tigers
