Children of parents who are either unemployed or struggling to make ends meet will have presents under the Christmas tree this year thanks to the generosity of the Marine Crops League of Morgan County and its supporters.

The League conducted a “jail” fundraiser at an empty store building on Main Street in Hartselle Thursday evening in support of its Toys for Tots project for Morgan and Lawrence Counties.

A mock jail was set up and used to hold VIP prisoners for minor violations. Each inmate had the option of paying a $25 fine or spending 30 minutes in jail. An outsider could extend a prisoner’s sentence by paying $1 for each additional minute of jail time.  Fines collected during a four and one-half hour period totaled about $1,000.

At one time, the jail was holding three elected public officials, State Representative Ed Henry and Hartselle City Councilman Mike Robertson and Ken Doss.

Wayne Jones supported the fundraiser by selling pork loin plates. Entertainment was provided by Ally Burgess and Santa was available to greet and talk with children.

“We’ll use the money we raise to buy gifts for infants, two-year-olds and children 9-12,” said Sherry Sparks, project coordinator. “So far we haven’t collected enough toys to meet our need for those age groups.”

Sparks said members of the Marine Corps League would continue to accept toys and gift items through December 10. Distribution of toys to approximately 1,000 boys and girls is scheduled to begin December 7 and continue through December 18.

“All of the toys and money we’ve collected will stay in Morgan and Lawrence Counties,” said Marine Corps League commandant Loyd Potter. “I commend those who have worked long and hard to make this project a success and thank everyone who has made a contribution. Your generosity will make lots of deserving boys and girls happy this Christmas.”
