Trojans Smother Black Bears
There was plenty of action Friday night as the Muscle Shoals Trojans traveled to Decatur to take on the Austin Black Bears in a class 6A region eight battle.
On a very rainy and muggy night, things did not start well for the Trojans. Muscle Shoals fumbled the opening kickoff and gave the Black Bears the ball at the 42 yard line. Austin wouldn’t be able to do much though as they would go three and out. After a few punts by both teams, Austin got on the board first when quarterback Victor Garth took it 25 yards to the three then banged it in a play later to give Austin the lead 7-0.
The Trojans wouldn’t take long to answer however as they would march it right back down the field and cap it off with a Landon Smothers touchdown run to tie the game 7-7.
Muscle Shoals would get things going then as quarterback Landon Smothers would march the offense down the field and then he would score his second touchdown to put the Trojans up 13-7.
On Austin’s next possession, Garth would throw an interception to give the ball back to Shoals on the Bears 33 yard line. Smothers would then score his third touchdown of the night on the ground and put the Trojans up 21-7. On the ensuing kickoff, Austin would turn the ball over again and give Muscle Shoals the ball again with great field position. Smothers would also once again find the end zone, as Muscle Shoals would take a 28-7 lead at halftime.
Austin would try to fight back in the second half as they drove down the field, but another interception would give the ball right back to the Trojans. Austin would have one last glimpse of hope as running back Asa Martin would take the ball 97 yards for a touchdown to cut the Trojans lead to 35-14.
The big deficit would ultimately be too much for the Black Bears to overcome though as they would fall to Muscle Shoals 42-17. Muscle Shoals moves to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in region play with that win while Austin falls to 2-2 and 1-1 in region play. Muscle Shoals will return home next week to play Athens will Austin will travel to Cullman.
