Neel Senior Center to welcome guest speaker

Neel Senior Center director, Valerie Thrasher welcomes senior citizens age 60 and up to come to the center and participate in their activities. The center offers fellowship with other seniors, playing cards and other games and a really nice lunch.

A bus is available to pick up seniors in the Danville, Neel, Ironman, Rocky Ford and Johnson Chapel communities driven by Charlie Ezell. The group will be going to KFC July 28 for lunch.

The seniors vote on where they want to go eat monthly so they can pick their choice of food they enjoy. According to Valerie, Charlie Ezell delivers about 14 meals a day to shut-ins in the community.

The Neel Senior Center will have Reggie Freeman from the Southern Care Pharmacy in Hartselle as their guest speaker July 22 at 10 a.m., Mr. Freeman will speak to those attending about different medical issues and will have a question and answer session with the seniors. Anyone who can help with bingo, provide small prizes or provide entertainment for the seniors would be greatly appreciated. The phone number to contact the center is 256-773-3242, and Valerie will be happy to help you. The activities at the Neel Senior Center are from 9 a.m. to noon.

A special happy birthday is wished this week to Diane Sybert on July 18. All of her friends at the center express their best wishes for her birthday.

Young, William Hanline, Corine Jackson, Tommy Jenkins, Amy Lacy, Natalie Smith, Cary Lacy, Keri Callahan, Wanda Archer, Buddy Keen, April Griggs, Diane Young, Linda Yancy, Billy Dee Johnson, Dennis Olive, a three-year-old girl who is at St. Vincent’s, Mr. Bobby, Brenda, Helen and Tony, Jill and Melinda.

On Wed., July 8, former patrons of the downtown Weekday’s Deli met at noon for lunch. They enjoyed visiting Pig Stand BBQ as well as strawberry short-cake for the birthday members, Letha Hopkins, Jimmy McClanahan, Katie Tillman and Kay Farrer. Those attending the monthly gathering were Dwight Jones, Randall Ward, Bobbie Nix, Jackie Campbell, Linda Houston, Jeff Reid, Charles Teague, Traci Slate, Diane Tillman, Cohen Jarrett, Katie Tillman, Hana Tillman, Billy Tillman, Kay Farrer and Jimmy McClanahan. Their next meeting will be Wed., Aug. 12, at Holy Smoke BBQ.

Johnson’s Chapel UMC women met Tues., July 7, at 6 p.m. at the church fellowship hall. Carolyn Marshall was in charge of their program. The refreshment committee served members a delicious light meal. Peggy Penn Rogers has been at Johnson’s Chapel several weeks and everyone was happy to see her at church events. Peggy’s Penn, Hall and Price relatives had a reunion at her home Sat., July 11. Family members came from Tennessee, Texas, Missouri, Virginia and all over Alabama.

On Fri., July 10, Dan Price hosted a supper at his home near Rhodes Ferry Park in Decatur for the family.

Brother William Troyer from a Crossville, Tenn., Mennonite church was guest speaker at the Emmanuel Mennonite Church in Massey for both worship hours Sun., July 5. His 9:30 a.m. topic was the mercy of God and at 7 p.m., his topic was hell.

Wanita and Wayne Nisly and family and Bro. Sam and Arlene Nisly attended the Nisly reunion in Hutchinson, Kan. They celebrated Bro. Sam’s mother’s 95th birthday along with his thirteen siblings and their families June 19-21.

Cedar Plains Christian Church recognized their high school graduates Sun., June 28, at the 11 a.m. worship service. Everyone enjoyed a potluck lunch afterward. Homecoming Sunday will be Aug. 2 at 11 a.m., with a meal following. Brother Phillip Gilbert is their pastor. Andrea Williamson is the pianist. Everyone is welcome to this event.

The Shady Grove Baptist Church VBS was well attended with a total enrollment of 93 and an offering of $292.45 was collected. The money will be used for the Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes project.

The Fairview: Grace Place children will be going to Kids Church Kamp July 21-24, at Shocco Springs near Talladega. Angela McMinemon is their children’s director. Fairview is having many events for their 100th anniversary this year.

Randy Besnyl, Joyce O’Neil and Carolyn Besnyl of Massey have enjoyed relatives, visiting from California this week. Haley Besnyl of Rancho Cucamonga and Tim Besnyl of Costa Mesa came Sat., July 11. They have also visited Terry and Jerry Boyd in Decatur.

Matthew Roper, DeWayne and Mandy Roper, Rebekah Mobley, Daniel Mobley and Caroline Standridge have attended family events during their stay. Haley will return home July 20. Carolyn Besnyl, Joyce O’Neil and Tim Besnyl are planning a trip to Crystal City, Mo., July 21-24 to visit Joyce’s son, Alex O’Neil. Tim will return to Costa Mesa afterwards.

McKendree UMC of Massey was among those churches invited to Hopewell Baptist Church near Danville Sun., July 5. During the day, Hopewell hosted community and outlying vicinity residents for games, singing, inflatables for children, hamburgers and hotdogs. Sunday night, their church sponsored a night of praise service and afterwards fireworks to complete their Fourth of July patriotic and religious celebration.

Belated anniversary wishes go out this week for Rassie and Avis Wallace as they celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary July 13, Brian and Amber Pendleton as they celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary July 14, and happy wedding anniversary wishes to Gary and Penny Vest as they celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary on July 23.

Anita Reid presided at the Corinth West Baptist’s women meeting Sun., July 5 at 10 a.m. GayNell Wilhite used the 23rd Psalm for her devotional scripture. The theme was God is always with us as the shepherd is with his flock.

During the business session, Donna Smithson, director of VBS, said it would be a one-day event this year. The VBS is scheduled for Sat., July 18. Registration will be at 8:30 a.m. and classes and activities start at 9 a.m. Bible study, crafts, music and recreation will be part of the day. The theme this summer is Off the Map. At 3:30 p.m., there will be a closing program for the children and parents, and others are invited. After the program, there will be hamburgers and hotdogs, chips, drinks and cookies in the fellowship hall. The women’s group planned a program and menu for senior citizens day, Tues., July 21, at 11 a.m. Also their prayer group meeting was set for Fri., July 17, at 7 p.m. Patti Condo served sweet muffins and had a delicious fruit tray for the brunch. After food and fellowship, Anita adjourned the meeting.
