HCS adds Swafford to BOE, hires Jones for Central Office position

During the regular monthly meeting of the Hartselle City Board of Education, the board added two new faces to the system.

As part of the restructuring of the central office, the board took the first step in hiring a Director of Teaching and Learning. The job goal is to provide leadership in the development and improvement of the teaching and learning programs for the district.

Dr. Danna “Dee Dee” Jones is to fill this newly created position.

Jones currently serves as the Professional Development/Curriculum/Career Tech Supervisor for the Decatur City School System. She was a former principal at Somerville Road Elementary and Assistant Principal at Brookhaven Middle.

Jones is a native of Fort Payne but has been a resident of Decatur for 26 years. She and her husband Joe have two daughters Emsley, 19, and Caroline, 14.

She is very active in her community through Rotary, Salvation Army Board and chamber of Commerce. She is the keyboardist and a Sunday school teacher at Westmeade Baptist Church in Decatur.

She has been a leader in various roles during her 27 years in education. She received her Educational Leadership Ph.D in 2008 from the University of Alabama in Birmingham and The University of Alabama. She is also an alumnus of Northeast State Community College, and Jacksonville State where she earned her B.S. in elementary education.

Superintendent Dr. Vic Wilson is excited to have Jones join the central office staff and wants her to be a part of hiring the Coordinator of Professional Development and Curriculum. Both of these positions will fill vacancies left by the retirements of assistant superintendent Dr. Nancy Horton, director of counseling Dr. Franklin Penn, testing coordinator Wilsolene Cadman and student services coordinator Joan Grantland.

Jones will begin her new job July 1 at a salary of $101,826.

Jones said she is excited about working in the Hartselle City Schools system

“I am honored and excited to have this opportunity with Hartselle City Schools,” Jones said. “I am looking forward to coming to Hartselle to work with Dr. Wilson and the great people there as well as what we can do and accomplish for our community.”

Also coming on board will be new board member Mike Swafford.

Swafford was one of five who applied for the position vacated when board member Monty Vest resigned to move with her husband Andy to a new job position with Boeing in St. Louis, Mo.

Swafford is the Southeast Regional Sales Manager for AWI/Mobile. He manages distribution channels for mobile telecomm companies.

He and his wife Sallye Rowe Swafford have two children, Brennan, who will begin kindergarten this fall and Rowe, 2. They are members of Hartselle First United Methodist Church where he serves as chairman of the evangelism committee. Swafford is also a member of Hartselle Kiwanis club.

He attended Jacksonville State University and is originally from Fyffe.

Swafford said he is happy to be serving HCS.

“I’m excited to have this opportunity to serve our school system and our community,” Swafford said. “Hartselle City School has rich traditions and a vibrant future.”
