Funeral for Mary Ruth Maples Townsend, 90 of Massey, will be Sat., May 9 at 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. A. Ray Lee officiating and Peck Funeral directing.

Visitation will be Sat. May 9, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Peck Funeral Home.

Burial will be in McKendree Cemetery.

Mrs. Townsend died May 6, 2015, at River City Nursing Home. She was born June 1, 1924. She attended schools at Hartselle, Windes, Falkville and Florence State Teachers College. Later she taught at Union School and Massey School where her students were very fond of her and she of them. She was the oldest surviving teacher of Massey School. She retired from clerking at two stores, Kuhns in Hartselle and Wal-Mart in Decatur where her outgoing personality made her many, many friends. She was a member of McKendree United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Horace Townsend; and her parents, Ruth Jones Maples and Clyde F. Maples.

She is survived by her sons, Don Rickie Townsend (Gayle) and Larry Lamar Townsend (Judy); grandchildren are Scott, Crystal (Zack), Mary Ann, Larame (Kasey) and Kristy (Chris); six great-grandchildren, Lucas, Austin, Ashley, Mikala, Allie and Hayden; two sisters, Clara Nell Howell (Sim) and Rachel King (Cooper).

Pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to McKendree Cemetery.
