Community Calendar for Oct. 2

Oct. 3

Amy’s Fashion Jewelry Fundraisers is having a jewelry sale at Somerville Rd. Office complex in the basement Thur., Oct. 3, 8 a.m. 5 p.m. and Fri., Oct. 4, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This sale benefits the foundation for mental health. The public is welcome. Cash, checks and debit/credit cards are acceptable.

A Fall Pinterest Party is scheduled at the civic center, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m. The project selected is a whimsical fall door hanger. The fee is only $15 and includes all supplies. Please pay and register by Sept. 30.

Hartselle Parks and Recreation will host the it’s series finale movie “Ghostbusters” in Sparkman Park’s Pavilion 4, at dusk for free. For more information, contact the civic center at 256-773-2581.

Hartselle Recycling pick-up scheduled for Oct. 4, and Oct. 18 this month.

Health fair and flu shot clinic, sponsored by Columbia Cottage and Rite Aid Pharmacy, will be Oct. 4, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The health fair will feature blood pressure screening, blood sugar testing, a virtual dementia tour, flu shot administered by Rite Aid pharmacist and much more. Most major insurances are accepted for the vaccine. Sign up for flu vaccine by calling civic center to get your name on list, by Sept. 27.

Decatur Women’s Connection will meet for its monthly luncheon Fri., Oct. 4, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m at Decatur Country Club. Speaker, Susan Smith of Georgia will speak on the topic entitled “There is hope when you are tired of trying to measure up.” The luncheon is $15 and complimentary childcare is available, if requested ahead of time. Massey School and Community Reunion will be Sat., Oct. 5, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Massey Fire Station, 386 Evergreen Rd. The Morgan County Cattlemen’s Association will sell steak sandwich plates Oct. 5 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at First Christian Church. Plates including a sandwich, chips, homemade desserts and a drink. Eat in or take out available. Proceeds will go to youth camp.

Oct. 7

The Hartselle Airport Board will be Mon., Oct. 7, at 6 p.m. in the Hartselle City Hall Conference Room.

Hartselle High School’s Homecoming 2013 festivities will begin Oct. 7 at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium with the Homecoming Kickoff. All Homecoming Maids and King candidates will be presented with escorts along with class skits performed. At the end of the evening, the Homecoming Court, elected by the students, will be announced. Admission is $3 with all proceeds going to the HHS PTSO.

The Hartselle City Council will have a work session Mon., Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. in the Hartselle City Hall Auditorium.

Oct. 8

Powder Puff Mechanics class will be taught my Garnett’s Automotive on Highway 31 South in Hartselle, Oct. 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. The class is open to any female ages 16 and older. Register and pay the $20 fee at the civic center by Oct. 4.

Hartselle High School will have class powder puff football games Oct. 8 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at J.P. Cain Stadium. Admission is $3 with proceeds to the PTSO.

Hartselle Boys Basketball registration will be every Tuesday in October from 6 to 8 p.m. The registration fee is $60 for ages 6-12 and $65 for ages 13-14.

Smooth Operator Cake Decorating class will be every Tuesday in October at the civic center from 6 to 9 p.m. This five-week hands-on decorating course will teach you how to make your own tasty fondant, and how to roll and apply it. Students must be 12 years old or older, with a limit of 10 students. Angela Mullican of Crazy Daisy Cakes will teach the class. Registration and fee must be paid by Sept. 27, at 4 pm. You will be given a supply list when registering.

The Hartselle City Council will have a regular meeting Tues., Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. in the City Hall Auditorium.

Oct. 10

The annual Hartselle High School Battle of the Classes will take place Oct. 10 at 1:30 p.m. in the school gym. Parents and friends are encouraged to come and cheer on your favorites. Admission is $3.

Oct. 11

Kids Council meetings will be held every third Tuesday of the month at the civic center at 6 p.m. Kids, let your voices be heard! The council consisting of two students from each elementary school, the intermediate and junior high school, will help Parks and Recreation event staff brainstorm for new ideas concerning events and programs for area youth. Interested students should turn in completed applications no later than Oct. 11. Contact civic center for more information.

The annual Hartselle High School Homecoming pep rally will be held in the gymnasium Oct. 11 at 2:15 p.m.

The Hartselle Tigers battle West Point in a Class 5A, Area 8 matchup for HHS’s homecoming football game. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. The Homecoming Queen will be crowned at halftime. Special honored guests that evening will be members of the Class of 1964 and 1993, who are celebrating reunions.

Oct. 15

Hartselle Boys Basketball registration will be every Tuesday in October from 6 to 8 p.m. The registration fee is $60 for ages 6-12 and $65 for ages 13-14.

Oct. 18

Friday night fun at the civic center will begin Oct. 18, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and continue as a monthly event held every third Friday of the month. Kids ages 5-10 will be divided into age divisions and we will have age appropriate games for each group. Snacks will be provided. Please register and pay the $10 fee by the Monday before the event.

“Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®” will be held in front of the second floor entrance to the Morgan County Courthouse Oct. 18 at 5 p.m. Everyone is invited to participate with men in high heels leading the way. Grandpa’s got talent- All grandpa’s are invited to showcase their talents on Oct. 22, at 10 a.m. To register for the meal, contact your local senior center. To register for the talent show contact the civic center. Admission is free!

Oct. 24

The Annual Hartselle Historical Society meeting will be at Sedona’s Steakhouse Oct. 24, at 6 p.m. The program will be presented by Lee Greene, Jr. It will be an update about the Woodall Bridge Civil War Skirmish.

Students in Hartselle City Schools will receive their report cards Oct. 24.

Oct. 25

The Auxiliary of American Legion Post 52 will host a spaghetti lunch as a fundraising project on Fri., Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The menu consists of spaghetti, drink and toast for $8. Oct. 26

The Youth Halloween Masquerade and dance will be Oct. 26 from 7 to 10 p.m. There will be a costume contest and dance for students from 5th to 8th grade, from any school district. Admission is $5 per person. Costumes will be judged on originality, creativity and best overall theme. No full face masks will be allowed. Chaperones will be needed, call by Oct. 21 to help.

Oct. 31

Spooktacular Shindig Oct. 31, at 5 p.m. at the youth soccer fields on Groover Road. We will be hosting a Trunk or Treat in conjunction with the final family movie night in the park. The movie Hocus Pocus will begin at 7 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for best decorated Trunk, and best costume. For more information contact the civic center at 256-773-2581.

All month

The Birthday Bash at the civic center offers a birthday party theme to suit your child. The fee is $100, for 12 guests, ages 5 and older. It includes a party room, two coordinators, simple decorations and games. Party days are Monday – Friday from 6 to 8 p.m., or Saturday, from 10 a.m. to noon. The Yoga class will meet at the civic center every Thursday at 6 p.m.. The fee is $25 per month.

The Hartselle Hope AL-Anon Family Group, located at 527 Sparkman St. in Hartselle, meets Mondays at 8 p.m., Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m., Wednesdays at noon and 8 p.m., Thursdays at 5:30 p.m., Fridays at 7 p.m. and Saturdays at 7 p.m. The Ala-Teen Family Group meets Fridays at 7 p.m. For more information, call 1-888-425-0775.

AARP Chapter 1831 meets the first Tuesday of every month except July, at the Christ Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, located 721 Pickens St. SW in Hartselle, at 10 a.m.

Dale Serrano Dance Studio will meet on Monday nights at the civic center. Instructors will strive to supply children not only the foundation of dance, but with tools for life. For more information, call 205-822-6378 .

Aerobics classes are held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Sparkman Civic Center, at 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. This class is taught by Mellonie Chappell and is for all ages. It’s the perfect opportunity to lose a few pounds and gain new friends at the same time. The fee is $25 per month or $10 per visit.

Senior Nutrition Center, also known as the Hartselle Senior Center is the place for friendly visiting, serious Rook and Canasta, a loud game of Texas spinner dominoes, sing-a-longs, informative chats and so much more. We operate from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday and have been known to jump on an evening supper bus now and then. The Hartselle Civitan Club meets the first and third Monday at 6 p.m. in Sparkman Civic Center Room 10. The club works with Civitan International to support and work with people in our community with mental and physical disabilities. They also support the Civitan International Research Center in Birmingham. Civitan is the only civic club with a research center. Hartselle Civitan Club was responsible for starting the Special Needs Accessible Playground located directly behind the Sparkman Civic Center. Priceville Palace hosts a Big Band Swing with the Sophisticated Swingers on the first Friday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Every Saturday night Glenn Wood and the Crosscut Band is featured. A free couples dance class is held on the first and third Saturdays from 6 to 7 p.m. You do not have to have a partner to participate. For more information, call 256-353-4362.

All mothers of active duty reserve or honorably discharged military service members are invited to attend monthly meetings of Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. The Morgan County Chapter meets the first Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at East Highland Baptist Church in Hartselle.

The Hartselle Chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous meets Mondays at 8 p.m.; Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m.; Wednesdays at noon and 8 p.m.; Thursdays at 5:30 p.m.; Fridays at 7 p.m. and Saturdays at 7 p.m. The Friday meeting is a smoking meeting. Country Music and Dance- Put on your boots and kick up your heels every first and third Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m. at Sparkman Civic Center. Hack Ward and the Good Time Country Band will be performing some of your favorite country songs. Admission is $5 per person. Concession will also be available.

Hartselle’s New Beginnings Quilt Guild meets on the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the basement of First Christian Church on East Main Street. It is open to all who are interested in quilt making, The guild is focused on beginning quilt makers to help them learn how to make a new block each month and new techniques used to make them.
