The No. 11 Falkville Blue Devils (3-0, 3-0) defeated Appalachian (1-2, 1-2) 49-6 at Burl Vest Stadium Friday night, despite miscues on offense.

Falkville’s domineering defense forced the Eagles to a three-and-out on their opening drive. As the offense took over, Ryan Sullivan found Cade Wilemon on an eight-yard pass play in the end zone at the 6:55 mark in the first quarter, capping an eight-play drive.

Pressure from Zach Garrison and Canaan Smith created tackles for a loss and a quick punt from the Eagles.

Back-to-back pass completions set up a Sullivan touchdown on a three-yard keeper. He added a run for a two-point conversion to give the Blue Devils a 15-0.

Appalachian scored the first points against the Blue Devils’ defense with a 65-yard touchdown run. Garrison sacked the Eagle quarterback on the two-point try to keep Falkville ahead 15-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Lengthy gains from Hunter Woodall on the ground made way for the 22-yard touchdown pass from Sullivan to double-covered Aaron Estes in the corner of the end-zone.

Big defensive stops from Garrison, Shawn Mears and Tyler Woodall followed by a sack for a loss by Garrison gave the Devils a short field to work with. Hunter Woodall scored on a 51-yard run, cutting through defenders for the touchdown.

Mears forced a fumble, which was recovered by Tyler Woodall recovered at Appalachian’s 32-yard line. Despite two penalties by the Devils on the goal line, Falkville scored again, this time on a four-yard pass play from Sullivan to Wilemon for his second touchdown of the game. The Devils led 35-6 at the half.

After halftime, the Blue Devils’ persistence on defense paid off as Estes pulled down an interception around the four-minute mark of third quarter. But the turnover would lead to no points on the third quarter.

Two minutes into the fourth quarter, Sullivan connected with Wilemon for a third touchdown with an eight-yard pass.

Following back-to back tackles, one for a loss, Falkville took over on the Eagles 39-yard Sullivan added the final score on a 31-yard quarterback keeper to make it 49-6.

Woodall finished the night with 16 carries for 159 yards and a touchdown. Sullivan had 13 carries for 78 yards with two rushing touchdowns and was 17 of 25 for 175 yards and four touchdowns. Wilemon scored three touchdowns on his three receptions for a total of 20 yards. Estes had four grabs for 72 yards, one touchdown, and managed a pick on defense.

Austin Wilhite finished with three big catches for 72 yards. Zach Garrison led in tackles with seven, four of them for a loss of yards. Canaan Smith and Shawn Mears both had five tackles.

FHS will travel to Meek (1-2, 0-2) next Friday. The Tigers fell to Sumiton Christian 25-24.
