SUMITON – Falkville’s Blue Devils (5-0, 5-0) are now playoff bound after grasping a 34-13 win against the Sumiton Christian Eagles Friday.

Sumiton was the first to get on the board against Falkville. Recovering a fumble on the Falkville 29-yard line led to a 23-yard field goal by Trey Collins with 7:09 left in the first quarter.

At the 11:16 mark in the second, the Blue Devils fumbled in the endzone for an Eagle safety, increasing Sumiton Christian’s lead 5-0 on Falkville.

Falkville’s defense playing a huge role in the win over Meek last week, set up the first score of the night for the boys in blue. Aaron Estes picked off an Eagle pass on their own 4-yard line.

The first play of the offensive drive was a 96-yard touchdown run from Hunter Woodall with 8:25 on the clock and Ryan Sullivan added the PAT, giving Falkville their first lead of the night 7-5.

“They did a really good job taking away our best running play,” said head coach Joel Schrenk. “And so because of that we were able to capitalize on the two long runs. They didn’t have enough people to block us, and they knew that. Also, Hunter is great; he is going to be able to make people miss.”

The Eagles replied with a score of their own less than five minutes later on a six-play drive and 8-yard carry by Nathan Godwin. He also called his own number in the two-point conversion try, giving Sumiton the lead again over the Blue Devils 13-7.

The Blue Devils were not finished offensively. On a fourth-and-5 with 2:37 in the second quarter, Ryan Sullivan faked a punt and found Lucas Johnson on a 58-yard pass play for a touchdown. Sullivan was again true on the extra point, sending Falkville with the lead into halftime 14-13.

“We haven’t given up a point in the second half in the last three games, but our defense played awesome once again,” said Schrenk.

Mixing up the offensive side for FHS, Sullivan was given a look from the quarterback position (3-for-3 for 89 yards) and managed a one-yard quarterback keeper for a touchdown with 5:45 to play in the third quarter after a five-play drive. Sullivan also added the PAT sending the score 21-13.

After forcing the Eagles to punt, FHS managed a five-yard quarterback keeper from Aaron Estes after a four-play drive with 2:19 to play in the third quarter. Sullivan’s extra point was blocked bringing the score 27-13.

In the fourth quarter, the defense showed out as the Blue Devils made another stop, this time led by an interception from Tyler Woodall on the eight-yard line. Mimicking the same play from the second quarter, on the first play of the offensive drive Hunter Woodall again made his presence known with an impressive 92-yard carry for a touchdown at the 7:44 mark. Sullivan added his PAT and the Devils would progress to 34-13, and grab win number five on the season.

Hunter Woodall finished the night with 217 yards on 11 carries. Estes and Sullivan would combine for 10-for-14 with one interception and 105 yards.

The Blue Devils will travel to non-region opponent Donoho next Friday.
