HHS cross country competes in Chickasaw Trails

Hartselle High School’s cross country team competed in the highly competitive Chickasaw Trails Meet in Lawrence County on Saturday, finishing 14th in the girls division and 18th in the boys division.

Taylor Barnett was the first Hartselle girl to finish. She logged a time of 22:58 and finished in 63rd place. Three of her teammates, Abigail Davis (22:46), Reagan Bowling (23:15) and Mallory Faulkner (23:16) came in 67th, 68th and 69th, respectively.

Barnett is an eighth grader and Davis and Bowling competed in their first varsity 5K run.

In the boys division Aaron Davis paced Hartselle with a time of 18:39, which landed him in 81st place.

“The top four girls had a combined average time of 23:13, or almost two minute faster than last year’s average in the same event, said head coach Kenneth Lopez. “At the same time, we had four of our boys finish the run under 20 minutes.”

“The kids are giving me the effort I want and I was pleased with what they accomplished in their first major event,” he added. “We’re a young team and this was a real eye-opener for some of them. Our job is to continue to work hard in practice and strive to become more consistent.”
