It’s another warm, muggy weekend of football. Thankfully, the rain showers should be little less likely tonight.

Here’s a look at this week’s games:

Lawrence County at No. 1 Hartselle

Series: Hartselle leads 34-14-4

Last meeting: Hartselle won 42-37 in 2003

Tigers continue success: Once the Tigers worked through their early miscues, Hartselle hit its stride and picked up where it left off last year. Even though the Tigers committed three turnovers and had nine penalties, they still managed to defeat 6A Hillcrest, a team whose only loss was to Hoover in 2011, by four touchdowns.

Lawrence County returns: The Red Devils’ last appearance on Hartselle’s schedule was in Bob Godsey’s first year as a the Tigers’ head coach. Now in his 10th year, Lawrence County returns. Part of the reason for the absence is due to Lawrence County being a 4A school. They moved up to 5A two years ago and the two are now in the same region.

Streaks: The Tigers enter this season on a 14-game region game winning streak. They have also extended their school-record winning streak to 16 games and have also won 16 consecutive regular season games.

Boaz at Brewer

Series: First meeting

Tale of two halves: The Patriots won the second half last week, but unfortunately the hole from the first half was too deep. Hopefully, the performance in the second half will help spark Brewer against Boaz this week.

Familiar team: Styles is somewhat familiar with Boaz. It was the first team Hartselle faced in the playoffs last year. While Boaz doesn’t have 2,000-yard career rusher Tyler Martin back, Boaz will look to have some success in the passing game.

Watch out for Woods: Boaz’s Terrell Woods made the AHSAA Prep Spotlight last week. He had eight tackles including five for a loss, three quarterback hurries, 1.5 sacks, a caused fumble and pass break-up in a 36-13 win over Guntersville. Keeping Woods out of the Patriot backfield is a key for Brewer.

Rogers at Priceville

Series: First meeting

Looking to go 2-0: The Bulldogs are trying to do something they haven’t done since their second year of football in 2003, win their first two games. In other winning seasons, Priceville never went 2-0 and, in fact, started the season 0-2 when they finished 6-5 and made their only trip to the playoffs.

Blanked by Class 5A No. 2 team: Rogers didn’t have a good first week, but that was because they faced Class 5A No. 2 Muscle Shoals, a team that will challenge Hartselle for first place in Region 8. Rogers is looking to rebound from that tough defeat.

Defense, special teams step up: Priceville took a 23-14 lead in the first half of its game with West Morgan, but only three points were a direct result of the offense. The three touchdowns were scored on a fumble return, kickoff return and punt return. That propelled the Bulldogs to a win.

Vinemont at Danville

Series: Vinemont leads 19-7

Last meeting: Vinemont won 20-12 in 2009

Hawks start 1-0: The second year of the Scott Curd era at Danville got off to a good start. The Hawks won their first season opener in three years with a 21-7 win over Randolph School.

Teams have similar seasons in 2011: This could be an important game for both teams as far as building confidence. Both teams only won two games apiece last year. Both are coming off good opening-game wins. Look for a very competitive game tonight.

Stats from last week: The Danville defense dominated the line of scrimmage, holding Randolph to just 43 yards rushing on 32 attempts. The Hawks also recorded three sacks while limiting the Raiders to just 46 yards total offense in the second half. For the game, Randolph had 172 yards of offense. Randolph also converted just three of 15 third-down opportunities, while Danville was seven-for-14. Offensively for Danville, Morgan completed 11 passes to 7 different receivers. McAbee had three receptions for 19 yards, while Brit Bowling (36 yards), Jason Haynes (15 yards) and Clemons (8 yards) each had two.

Shades Mountain Christian at Falkville

Series: First meeting

Already surpassed last year: Falkville scored more points in one game this year than they did all of last year. They defeated Southeastern, who was playing its first ever game last week, 61-7. The Blue Devils only managed 58 points in all of 2011. This is also the first win over a team not named Cold Springs since beating Oakman in 2009.

Explosive plays: Falkville had six scoring plays of 40 yards or more in the game. most of those were running plays, but Cade Wilemon also had a 90-yard kickoff return.
