Week 1: Thursday Game Notes
West Morgan at Priceville
Series: 1-1
Last Meeting: Priceville won 37-33 in 2011
Last year’s win breaks losing streak: Priceville ended a 19-game losing streak last season with its dramatic come-from-behind win over West Morgan. The Bulldogs trailed by 16 in the second half, but then-quarterback Chance Ellsworth blossomed late in the game leading the furious comeback. That was also the first game in the Dirk Strunk era.
A difference 24 points makes: That was the difference between the Bulldogs having a winning record and their 3-7 record last year, according to Strunk. The Bulldogs lost a close game with Wilson and then had two heartbreaking losses to Danville and Ardmore in back-to-back weeks. The Bulldogs play six teams that didn’t have a winning season last year. It will be important to win all of those games to give the Bulldogs a chance at a winning record.
Randolph Academy at Danville
Series: Danville leads 4-0
Last Meeting: Danville won 24-16 in 1979
Important to get off to good start: A good start for Danville is imperative if the Hawks want to finish with a winning record. Their first six games are against teams who didn’t have a winning record last year. Of those, Winston County was the only to go 5-5.
Turnovers a problem: The Hawks had four turnovers in its one half of football against Holly Pond last week. The Hawks moved the ball fairly well, but the mistakes ended promising drives. The Hawks will have to eliminate those mistakes to have a chance to win.
