Man shoots self at service station

A man took his own life on Sunday afternoon while parked in a vehicle at Murphy USA Oil Co. on Hwy. 31, NW in Hartselle.

He was transported to Decatur General Hospital by Morgan County EMS, where he was pronounced dead.

A Hartselle police officer was dispatched to the scene to investigate a suspicious vehicle at 3:15 p.m., according to Investigator Lt. Justin Barley.

The officer made contact with a man and a woman in the vehicle and was running a license plate check when the woman exited the vehicle and shouted that the man had a gun and was threatening to shoot himself, Barley said. When he was directed by the officer to put down the gun and vacate the vehicle, he fired the gun.

The man’s identity was not revealed in accordance with police department policy.
