8U team wins championship
Hartselle’s 8U All-Star softball team made a clean sweep of the 2012 World Series Tournament at Robertsdale, defeating the Bad Company of Slidell, La. 8-1 in the championship game on Sun. July 18.
Karsi Lentz had a big hand in changing the course of the game as she belted a 3-run home run in the bottom of the first inning with Hartselle trailing 0-1. After than it was all Hartselle.
Team members celebrated their victory by dousing head coach Shannon Ferguson with a cooler of Gatorade. Then they received a handsome team trophy in addition to individual trophies.
The tournament was originally scheduled to be played in Gulf Shores but had to be moved due to rainy weather. The event was a washed out on Saturday and the tournament games were delayed until Sunday.
In the first of three tournament games played on Sunday, Hartselle pounded out 16 hits and scored a 10-2 win over NEC of Pensacola, Fla.
In their next game, they trailed 0-3 to Hoover before tying the game in the fourth inning and blowing the game open with a 6-run spurt in the fifth. They added another run in the sixth and held on for a 10-8 win.
In three pool play games, Hartselle defeated Slidell, La. 11-2 on the strength of 21 hits, the Intimidation of Louisiana 14-2 on the strength of 22 hits, and East Walker 14-2 behind a 16-hit attack.
