J.P. Cain Stadium Run attracts 167 participants

The second annual J. P. Cain 5K Stadium Run attracted 167 runners on Saturday and gave Hartselle Quarterback Club a big boost in its ongoing efforts to improve the stadium.

While the field of participants weighed heavily in Hartselle’s favor, Moulton dominated the top 10 finishers in the male division and also had the overall winner in the female division.

Freddie Shirah of Moulton was the first competitor to finish the run with a time of 18:33. He also finished first in the 2011 run.

“I’ve done better,” Shirah said. “There was a lot of humidity out there today.”

The first female to cross the finish line was Laura Bennett, also of Moulton. The Lawrence County High School cross-country runner came in 14th overall with a time of 22:57.1

She agreed with Shirah that the high humidity affected her time.

“I did better in a run on Friday,” she said.
