Hartselle holds narrow lead in girls Class 5A track

Hartselle’s girls track team will begin Day 2 of the Class 5A AHSAA track and field meet in Gulf Shores as the top team, but just barely.

The Lady Tigers finished Day 1 with 33 points, which is one point more than Scottsboro and three points more than St. Paul’s.

Hartselle has that lead thanks to a near sweep in the javelin. Jessica Matthews won the event with a throw of 116-4 followed by Ashton Pennington with 104-11 for second and Savannah Holmes with 101-11 for fourth place.

Quanesha Burks took second place in the girls triple jump with an effort of 38-9.5. St. Paul’s Lacey Dent set a new state record of 39-11.75 to win the event.

Burks will also compete for state championships in the girls 100m, 200m and the long jump on Saturday. She had the fastest qualifying times in the 100m and 200m races.

Hartselle’s 4x800m relay team also scored two points with a seventh place finish (11:03).

On the boys side, the bright spot on Friday was Jordan Frazier qualifying fifth for the 110-meter hurdles.

Priceville’s Nick Bell had the best finish for the Bulldog track team in Class 4A. He qualified sixth in the boys 100m dash.

For Brewer, Trina Badger just missed scoring of the Lady Patriots in the girls 1,600 meters. She was 10th with a time of 5:49.91, just three seconds behind eighth place. The Lady Patriot 4x800m relay also finished ninth with a time of 11:08.65.
