‘Dogs fall in sweet 16 to West Limestone

HANCEVILLE – No. 3 Priceville only lost three games all year, but two came at the hands of West Limestone.

The second loss, a 49-40 loss in the Northwest Regional Semifinals Thursday night, ended the Bulldogs’ magical season much earlier than Bulldog coach Darrell Haynes would have liked.

“We had a great season, but we just didn’t play well tonight,” Haynes said. “Their big man hurt us… He wasn’t their leading scorer last time we played, but he was big tonight.”

West Limestone’s Preston Herring proved to be the difference in the tightly contested game. He was 10-for-12 from the field and scored 25 points to lead the Wildcats to the win.

Things looked good early for Priceville as they built a 12-6 lead, thanks in part to a 3-point play from Derrick Couch. West Limestone went on a 7-0 run to take its first lead of the game and led 23-22 at halftime.

Michael Varner gave the Bulldogs the lead early in the third quarter, but West Limestone took the lead for good moments later on a Nathan Adams bucket. The Wildcats then hung on in the fourth quarter, making its free throws down the stretch.

Varner and John Hawkins led the Bulldogs with 12 each. Varner had 8 rebounds. Matt Teague had 6 followed by Couch with 3, Cody Gibbs with 3, Chance Ellsworth with 2 and Hayden Prentice with 2.
