John Calvin Stanfield

A family graveside service for John Calvin Stanfield, 86, of Birmingham, formerly of Hartselle was May 11, at Memory Hill in Albertville.

Mr. Stanfield died Monday, May 9, 2011. He was born in Etowah  County. He received his BS from Jacksonville State University and his MA from Vanderbilt University. A WWII veteran, he served in the Navy as a Pharmacist Mate, 1st Class, aboard a  hospital ship. He retired from Hartford Insurance where he worked as claims manager for the Decatur office. A lifelong Methodist he was the proud grandson of a Methodist minister. He was a member of First United Methodist Church Hartselle where he participated in the Wesleyan Sunday School Class. He attended Highlands United Methodist Church after moving to Birmingham. He was a member of the Booster Club and a constant supporter of Hartselle High School athletics. He enjoyed vegetable gardening, was an avid hunter and fisherman and a fan of Alabama football. He served as president of the Tucson Sunrise Lions Club and took pleasure in the benefits of friendships and exercise as a participant of Aquanauts Decatur. He was proud to be on the inaugural Honor Flight for WWII veterans to see the WWII Memorial in Washington, DC. He was preceded in death by his parents, Irving and Mai Thompson Stanfield and sisters, Imogene Krasky and Capitola Pratt.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sue Galloway Stanfield; a son, Jeff Stanfield; a daughter, Nancy Werner and husband Peter; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
