The Hartselle girls soccer team fell to East Limestone 3-2 in overtime, 3-1 penalty kicks Wednesday afternoon in the Class 5A sub-state playoffs.

The game was tied 1-1 through most of the second half. The Lady Tigers first goal was scored by Taryn Dersham with Miriam Johennesson with the assist.

Just under midway through the second half, Johennesson kicked the ball past the East Limestone goalie to give Hartselle a 2-1 lead. Sarah Horner had the assist.

The Lady Tigers looked like they might be able hold on for the win in regulation, but pushing and shoving led to an East Limestone player falling down in the penalty area, which drew a controversial foul call from the referee with only 31 seconds left in regulation.

That allowed East Limestone to score a kick from the mark, tying the game at 2-2 and sending the match into overtime. B0th East Limestone goals in regulation were on penalty kicks.

Both teams played through a pair of 5-minute overtimes without scoring, setting up a penalty kick situation, but Hartselle could make only one of its four kicks while East Limestone made three.

The Hartselle Lady Tigers finished the season with a 9-8-1 record.
