Leonardo Antonio Sheppard, 32, of 239 County Road 205 is facing charges of burglary in the first degree. He is currently in jail under a $250,000 bond.

At the time of the incident, the suspect was out of jail on bond from a burglary charge in Hartselle stemming from a similar domestic altercation. The Morgan County District Attorney’s Office is seeking to have Sheppard’s bond in the case revoked.

At 1:30 a.m. on April 3, Morgan County Central Dispatch received a call of a burglary to an occupied dwelling in the 1000 block of 19th Avenue in Southeast Decatur.  Decatur Police officers responded and learned that the burglary stemmed from a domestic altercation.

“Leonardo Antonio Sheppard had allegedly broken into the residence of his ex-girlfriend and assaulted her,” according to a Decatur Police press release. “Sheppard fled the scene prior to the police arriving.  The victim received non-life threatening injuries that did not require medical treatment.”

On Wednesday, Decatur Police detectives with assistance from agents of the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Fugitive Task Force and deputies from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office located Sheppard at a residence on County Road 205 in Lawrence County.

The suspect tried to flee the area on foot, but authorities were able to take him into custody, according to police.
