Schools told to expect cuts
“Everyone wants more money but there’s none to be had,” said District 9 State Representative Ed Henry (R-Hartselle) as he addressed the Morgan County School Board at a work session Tuesday night.
Henry was invited to the meeting to give an update on the status of community service grants and provide information pertaining to state funding for schools during the remainder of this school year and beyond.
Henry said community service grants totaling $5 million are sitting on the Governor’s desk waiting to be signed. The reason is there’s no money.
“Gov. Bob Riley refused to sign them before he left office for that reason,” Henry stated. And our new governor has taken the same position.”
“Last year the Legislature decided to take 25 percent of this years grant money to give out in 2010,” he pointed out.
”There may be other opportunities to get the grants funded and I’m looking into that,” he added.
