Franklin takes office as county sheriff
Ana Franklin, 46, made political history in Morgan County on Tuesday as she was sworn in as the county’s first female sheriff and currently has the honor of being the only woman in the state to hold the title.
The 46-year-old mother of two daughters took the oath of office from Morgan County District Judge Brent Craig in a 2 p.m. courthouse ceremony.
The event was attended by a standing room only crowd of more than 300 supporters and well wishers.
During the brief ceremony, Franklin’s daughters, Erica and Alyssa held Bibles and afterwards she received her badge and handcuffs from Bill Davis, state president of the Fraternal Order of Police.
Judge Craig acknowledged that he has known Franklin since they were high school students and predicted that she will bring a quality of determination and tenacity to the sheriff’s office that she has demonstrated throughout her
Franklin expressed appreciation to her campaign team for the important role they played in her election and pledged to carry out a program of positive change in the sheriff’s department.
She also expressed pride and confidence in the men and women of the sheriff’s department and pledged to work with them to protect the lives and property of Morgan Countians.
“Please pray for me and all of our personnel,” she asked. “We have a lot to do but with our support we can look forward to getting a lot of good things done.”
