Trio tops the 2010 all-area football team
Hartselle’s run to the Class 5A football semifinals set several school records and the Tigers are continuing to reap the rewards of the successful season.
Senior quarterback Will Lang and senior noseguard Austin Borden stepped up this season both on and off the field in leadership roles as the Tigers tried to replace several talented starters from last year’s team.
Lang and Borden were chosen as the Hartselle Enquirer’s 2010 offensive and defensive players of the year respectively, while Hartselle head coach Bob Godsey was named the coach of the year after leading the Tigers to a 12-2 record and a No.1 ranking in the final Alabama Sports Writers Association poll at the conclusion of the regular season.
The Tigers have won 34 games over the past three years, equalling the best three-year span in school history.
Lang helped engineer an offense that set a school record for points in a season with 438.
The senior quarterback completed 180 of 256 attempts for 2,224 yards with 26 touchdowns.
Lang finished up his Hartselle career with a 22-5 record as a starting quarterback.
Borden finished the year with 78 tackles, including 24 tackles for losses. Despite playing in a system geared for Hartselle’s linebackers to make the primary stops, Borden racked up 12 quarterback sacks.
Joining Lang and Borden on the all-area team on the offensive side were Hartselle center Will Swann, offensive lineman Brian Malone, running back Malcolm Fossett, wide receiver Will Tiffin, kicker Gavin Marsh,
Defensively, the Tigers allowed just 11 points per game this season and had six players earn all-area honors.
Hartselle linebacker Jake Kimbrell, linebacker Dax Gillespie, linebacker Jordan Orr, defensive back Isaiah Fowler, defensive back Jackson Reeves and defensive back Terry Wiggins represented the Tigers on the first team.
Brewer was represented on the all-area team by offensive lineman Michael Chatman, wide receiver Taylor Bowling, athlete T.J. Graham and linebacker Matt Crowe.
Danville offensive lineman Corey Gillies leads a group of eight Hawks on the all-area team. Also earning honors are running back Jesse Posey, wide receiver Evan Cleghorn, return specialist Clint McAbee, defensive lineman David Pike, defensive lineman Seth Fagan, linebacker Trey Jones and defensive back Caleb Hill.
Falkville defensive back Justin Cobb and linebacker Corey Holiday represented the Blue Devils.
Priceville offensive lineman Mark Pope and running back Tanner Schell also earned first-team all-area honors.
