Danville, Priceville remain winless

DANVILLE – Sheffield quarterback Michael Melton ran for a touchdown and threw for three more to lead the Bulldogs to a 27-13 win over Danville last Friday night at Smith-Owens Stadium in the Class 3A, Region 7 opener for both teams.
Melton’s touchdown run from 1-yard out on fourth- and-goal gave the Bulldogs a 9-6 first quarter lead over Danville.
The Hawks had taken the lead earlier on a 35-yard run by junior QB Caleb Hill. Hill broke several tackles on his way into the end zone for a 6-3 Danville lead.
The Hawks regained the lead in the second period when Evan Cleghorn recovered a Danville fumble in the end zone.
Danville had the ball on the Sheffield 24 after a short punt by the Bulldogs. On first down, Hill ran the ball up the middle for a gain of 12 yards but fumbled the ball forward. A mad scramble ensued with Cleghorn recovering the ball for the Hawks. Lawrence Jacko kicked the PAT and Danville led 13-9.
A Danville turnover on the second play of the second half gave Sheffield the ball deep in Hawk territory. The Bulldogs would take advantage as Melton hit Ronald Yarbrough for a 5-yard touchdown. The extra point attempt failed but Sheffield had the lead at 15-13.
The Hawks would be unable to put the ball in the end zone in the second half while Melton threw touchdown passes of 48 and 47 yards to Zachary Johnson and Justin King respectively.
Sheffield would miss the extra point each time but the Bulldogs would get the win 27-13.
Central 68, Priceville 13
Central scored the first 47 points of the game on the way to a 68-13 victory over Priceville Friday night.
Priceville dropped to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in Class 4A, Region 8 play. The Bulldogs have now lost 11 straight games dating back to last season.
The Wildcats finished the night with 490 yards of rushing with 319 coming in the first two quarters of the game.
It took Central just five minutes to open up a 21-0 lead over the Bulldogs. Darian Howell scored on runs of 3 and 13 yards, and Jamarious Vaughn added a 76-yard punt return for another score.
Dalton Wilson scored twice more for Central and Taylor Hayes added another touchdown as the Wildcats opened up a 54-7 lead at the half.
Priceville will return to action this week on the road against Wilson looking for its first win.
