June 10, 1960-Bob Orr received his Masters in English today from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.
June 10, 1960-Joy Sue Gibson and Joe Groover were married this evening at the First Methodist Church. Rev. Warren Hamby officiated at the 7 p.m. ceremony. Mrs. Beverly Summers, soloist, and Harry Currier, organist, provided nuptial music. Immediately following, the newly married couple departed for a honeymoon in Daytona Beach, Fla.
June 12, 1960-Paul Thomas, a prominent local businessman, died today following a losing bout with cancer. Mr. Thomas was the owner of the Western Auto Associate store here, having purchased it on June 18, 1959, from Mrs. Lucile Palmer.
June 12, 1960-The stock market has recently had the biggest gains it has registered in 30 years. It’s anticipated that the government is going to be spending more, especially for space and defense.
The Dow is now at 654.88.
June 13, 1960-Red Cross swimming lessons began at the Hartselle pool today. Joe Denison is in charge.
June 13, 1960-June is a very dry month so far. There has been less than a fifth of an inch of rain. All types of gardens as well as row crops are badly in need of a good soaking.
June 13, 1960-County Superintendent of Education Lester Wooten asked the Morgan County governing body for money for a new education office building during their regular meeting this morning. Board Chairman Guy Roberts said the men would study Wooten’s plans and get back to him. It’s doubtful that the county can afford any new facility like this now.
June 13, 1960-J. L. Anders of Hartselle was involved in a tragic but totally unavoidable accident tonight in Athens. During a bad rainstorm, a woman from Racine, Wisc. walked into the path of his car. He had no opportunity to stop.
June 14, 1960-The main topic at this afternoon’s Hartselle city council meeting was a separate school system for Hartselle. No immediate action is contemplated.
June 14, 1960-As the result of a traffic accident today the Hartselle National Guard is being assigned the task of installing an emergency bridge to facilitate traffic flow between Huntsville and Redstone Arsenal.
The span will temporarily replace the one that was knocked out by today’s accident.
June 14, 1960-Johnny Tanner underwent a tonsillectomy at Hartselle Hospital this morning and is now recuperating at home. Johnny is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Tanner. John Pat Orr, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Orr, underwent the same operation Tuesday morning.
June 15, 1960-An Eva man, Elbert Cobbs, died as a result of an accident on Highway 67 east of Hartselle this morning. One of the three cars involved in the disastrous wreck apparently failed to observe a stop sign.
June 15, 1960-The Falkville Market caught fire early this morning and before firemen were able to put it out the store had been virtually devastated as far as its stock of goods was concerned. Proprietors of the market are Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Dunlap.
June 15, 1960-Mrs. Jack Balew has been admitted as a patient to Decatur General Hospital.
June 15, 1960-Garland Rollins, owner of Falkville Nursing Home and president of the Alabama Nursing Home Association, was in Birmingham today for the group’s annual convention.
June 16, 1960-Norris Turney, Dennis Griffith, Skipper Drinkard, and Ginger Stover are attending summer school at Florence State College.
June 16, 1960-Hartselle State Rep. Bob Gilchrist is leading a Democratic farm group to a party meeting in Chicago. The function of the group is to write the farm plank of the 1960 Democratic platform prior to next month’s convention in Los Angeles.
