Alabama’s “move over” law has been expanded to include vehicles responding to accidents, such as wreckers.
The move over law requires drivers to move over one lane to provide space for emergency vehicles. If moving over is unsafe or impossible, drivers are required to slow to at least 15 mph below the posted speed limit or at 10 mph if the posted speed limit is below 20 mph. If you’re on a two-lane road, you’re required to move over as far as possible without leaving the lane, as well as slowing down.
The law has long included fire, police and other emergency vehicles. It is now expanded to include any vehicles, such as wreckers, that are parked on the side of the road with their emergency lights activated.
The fine for violation is $25 and increases with each offense.
Alabama passed its first “move over law” in 2006.
