J.P. Cain, retired Hartselle football coach and school principal, lost the lower part of his left leg in surgery at Huntsville Hospital following a Nov. 2 traffic accident on Bethel Road.
Cain was injured and trapped inside his car for more than an hour when a hay tedder broke loose from a pickup truck and rammed through the driver’s side door. Hartselle firefighters used power extraction tools to free him from the wreckage and provided emergency medical assistance on the scene with the help of County EMS and Huntsville Med-Flight attendants.
The 80-year-old retired educator was alert and able to speak with family members following a lengthy surgical procedure, according to his son, Paul Cain. He was a patient in the surgical intensive car unit on Wednesday morning and was listed in satisfactory condition.
The accident occurred in front of F.E Burleson Elementary School at approximately 4:15 p.m. Cain and his wife Ruth were traveling south. A pickup truck pulling the tedder was traveling north. It was driven by Ken James, 49, of Hartselle. Neither Mrs. Cain or James was injured.
