Hartselle athletes to represent North

A trio of Hartselle athletes will put aside summer vacation activities to get back to competion this week in the 13th annual Alabama All-Star Sports Week competition in Huntsville.
Hartselle graduate Russell Powell will play in the North-South football game Friday, while rising seniors Alex Holmes and Matt Walker were scheduled play in the volleyball and soccer games this week.
Sports Week, which includes in-state all-star games in soccer, baseball, girls’ and boys’ basketball, softball and football, will feature a clinic and special sessions for coaches, principals, athletic directors, cheerleader coaches and officials.
Florida head football coach Urban Meyer is a keynote speaker for the event.
An All-Sports Equipment Expo and other related activities are scheduled throughout the week. A highlight of this year’s Sports Week will be a Sportsmanship Banquet honoring all schools that have not had an ejection or fine in the 2008-09 school year.
For Powell, an invited walk-on at Auburn, the football game will mark his final prep appearance. He was a four-year starter for Hartselle at center, but could be used as a blocking back at Auburn.
Walker played in the North-South soccer game Tuesday at John Hunt Park. Results from the boys’ and girls’ games were not available at press time.
Holmes, a two-sport standout at Hartselle, will play for the North in the volleyball all-star game at 2 p.m. today at the University of Alabama-Huntsville’s Spragins Hall.
The North-South football game wraps up the week of all-star competition with a 7 p.m. game on the Alabama A&M campus.
Huntsville head coach Kevin Weiseman will lead the North squad. Assistant coaches will be Pete Bush, Cordova; Hal Riddle, Hewitt-Trussville; Tripp Curry, Cherokee County; Swane Morris, Gaston; Rodney Stidham, Hamilton; and Royal Carpenter, Speake.
Kyle Dawkins of Wetumpka will be an administrative coach.
