Nov. 13, 1958-Macon Hardwick, R. B. Ryan, Olen Tapscott, and David Sandlin have been hunting deer in South Alabama this week. Sandlin got an eight-point buck.
Nov. 14, 1958-Morgan County Probate Judge T. C. (Cliff) Almon has now served exactly 20 years in this position. He was appointed on Nov. 14, 1938, by Governor Bibb Graves. When he completes the fourth term to which he was recently elected, he will have served longer as probate judge than any other man in the history of this county.
Nov. 14, 1958-Gunfire erupted in the Lacey’s Spring community this morning when a father-in-law allegedly shot his son-in-law. The wounded young man was brought to Block-Chandler hospital here for treatment. The justification for the shooting was the father-in-law’s belief that his daughter had been mistreated by her husband.
Nov. 15, 1958-Two women got into a fight on the courthouse grounds while they were standing in a long line to purchase their new 1959 auto tags before the noon deadline.
Nov. 16, 1958-The newly four-laned Highway 31, originally promoted as the “Bee Line” from north to south, had a new section dedicated today in Giles County, Tenn. This will enable travelers from Hartselle to go further north without having to switch back to an old two-lane road.
Nov. 17, 1958-Joe Starnes, president-elect of Civitan International, addressed members of the local club at their regular meeting tonight.
Nov. 17, 1958-Funeral services were held today at Mt. Tabor Methodist Church for L. D. Day, age 82 and a resident of Hartselle Route 3. The Revs. J. E. Bishop and D. R. Jarrett officiated. (Mr. Day passed away on Saturday, Nov. 15.)
Nov. 18, 1958-The Birmingham News reported today that, due to the bowl ban on the War Eagles scheduled to last until 1961, there would be no Auburn bowl appearance allowed this year, even if all the proceeds were given to charity.
Nov. 18, 1958-The Hartselle Chamber of Commerce is offering the people of Hartselle and vicinity a five-minute program on local radio station WHRT. The program, which began this morning, is on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 a.m.
Nov. 18, 1958-Betty Palmer had the program at today’s meeting of the Rotary Club. Betty showed a movie that featured her visit to the World’s Fair in Brussels as well as her travels to Germany, Switzerland, France, and the Netherlands. She said she found the American pavilion at the fair rather commonplace. Her favorite was the British.
Nov. 19, 1958-Edward Summers is the newly appointed head of the Hartselle civil defense program. Confirmation of this designation by the Hartselle City Council is assured. It is estimated that 20,000-30,000 evacuees could come here from Huntsville in case of war. There is a 200-bed emergency hospital in the electric department warehouse.
Nov. 19, 1958-Morgan-Lawrence County State Senator Robert R. Berryman is the new grand master of the Alabama Masonic Grand Lodge.
The elevation came today at the close of the Masons’ 138th annual communication in Montgomery.
Nov. 19, 1958-Mrs. James Peck and Mrs. Joe Speake were joint hosts to members of the Current Review Club this afternoon.
Nov. 19, 1958-A car-truck collision tonight at the intersection of North Sparkman Street and Longhorn Pass demolished both vehicles, but both drivers escaped with few injuries.
