April 10, 1958-J. B. Roberts is currently constructing two five-room homes on Cedar Street. He estimates that he will need to spend $10,000 on each of the dwellings.
April 11, 1958-MCHS beat Falkville 4-0 in a baseball game played there this afternoon. The key to Hartselle’s win was the great pitching of Lothian Smallwood who struck out 12 of the Blue Devils and gave up only two hits. Brub Hamilton is the MCHS coach.
April 11, 1958-Members of the senior class at Falkville High presented a play tonight in the gym. Featured cast members included Harold Ray McCaig, Mack Freeman, Doris Derrick and Jerry Thompson.
April 12, 1958-Robert Kennedy, an expert on organized crime in America and a consultant to a Senate committee investigating this problem, spoke at St. Bernard College in Cullman this morning. Mr. Kennedy is a very charismatic man who seems to have a bright future ahead of him.
He urged the young people to take a great interest in government at all levels. Kennedy spoke at UA the previous night to an audience that included several Hartselle students.
He is a brother of U.S. Sen. John F. Kennedy.
April 12, 1958-Folks with plans for a vacation in Havana probably won’t have to change them. It looks like the revolt led by Fidel Castro is sputtering while the forces of President Fulgencio Batista are growing increasingly strong.
April 13, 1958-Local workers at Redstone Arsenal, along with their colleagues, are excited at the prospect that the Jupiter rocket on which they have been working for such a long time will be launched with destination moon in the near future.
April 14, 1958-Morgan County is in good financial shape, according to Guy Roberts, head of the county board. Property on which taxes are assessed is now worth about $35 million.
April 15, 1958-A survey of Alabama newspaper editors shows that they believe overwhelmingly that Judge George C. Wallace will be elected governor of Alabama in the primary coming up in a couple of weeks. (Wallace actually lost decisively to John Patterson.)
April 16, 1958-Morgan County governing board members say they support daylight saving time if other governments will go along with it.
At present, however, support for “fast time” seems limited even though Redstone leaders have strongly urged its adoption.
April 16, 1958-Alabama’s reputation as a “divorce mill” is getting some attention in the current gubernatorial campaign. Church leaders have urged candidates to promise to do whatever is necessary to prevent misuse of the courts in order to get easy divorces.
