Commission seeks pay hike for coroner

By Staff
Clif Knight, Hartselle Enquirer
Morgan County Coroner Russ Beard will receive a substantial increase in pay if a resolution passed by the Morgan County Commission on Tuesday gets through the State next year.
The commission passed a resolution requesting the local legislative delegation to introduce and enact local legislation to increase the coroner's annual compensation from $24,500 to $30,000. The current salary is $15,000 plus a $9,500 expense allowance annually.
The requested legislation would also give the commission the authority to adjust the coroner's salary and other compensation from time to time as it sees fit, entitle the holder of that position to the same percentage increases in compensation and expense allowance to which other public officials are entitled and authorize the coroner to participate in the Alabama public employees retirement program.
The governing body acted on other matters as follows:
Approved payment of $75 to the Association of County Administrators of Alabama for annual membership dues for Syble Atkins, county administrator, and Carol Long, deputy administrator of the Morgan County Commission office, Jan. 1, 2008, through Dec. 31, 2008.
