Sept. 21, 1956 —The Stewart and Bennett gin caught fire today due to a piece of baling wire getting caught in the gin heads. Damage was estimated at $50.
Sept. 21, 1956 —The Morgan County fair is in full swing at the Decatur coliseum grounds. A jitterbug contest is scheduled for tonight at 8.
Sept. 22, 1956 —Alabama now has, for the first time, more than one million auto registrations. This represents the fastest growth of any southern state.
Sept. 23, 1956 —Jane Russell portrays the shady lady with the golden touch in Twentieth-Century-Fox’s Cinemascope film, “The Revolt of Mamie Stover,” opening tonight at the Sunset Drive-in Theatre. Hartselle’s Bill Huie is the author of the book on which this movie is based.
Sept. 24, 1956 —If you wish to vote in the November general election (which is just a formality since Democrats always win), the Morgan County Board of Registrars is now in session at the courthouse. You must have previously paid your poll tax, however.
Sept. 25, 1956 —Principal J. C. Petty of MCHS is being assisted this year by teachers Thurman Abercrombie, Elizabeth Barclift, J. P. Cain, Jane Michael, Tempie Cain, Linda Cain, Tony Daniel, Gladys Greer, Beulah Hester, Roman Higdon, Hollis James, Dorothy Myers, Herman Myers, Laura Hipps, Fay Parker, Lizzie Reed Penn, Beulah Pettey, Bonnie Ridgeway, Grayce Wasson, Effie Lou Gilchrist, and Charles Rowe.
Sept. 25, 1956 —Hartselle Hospital is in the process of adding a kitchen to its existing building.
Sept. 26, 1956 —A 34-year-old Vinemont man became Morgan County’s 10th traffic fatality this morning. Troy Rogers was tragically killed at Lacon as he waited for a ride to take him to work.
Sept. 27, 1956 —Erection began today on the 224-foot broadcasting tower of radio station WHRT, Hartselle’s newest business enterprise.
Sept. 27, 1956 —Morgan County teachers are meeting at MCHS today and tomorrow for their annual workshop. Evelyn Howell is leading group singing. Methodist pastor E. M. Barnes gave this morning’s devotional.
Sept. 27, 1956 —Broadhead-Cook Furniture Co. is holding its official grand opening this weekend and all of next week.
