Editor's note: The following comes from "A Look Back" columnist Dr. Bill Stewart: I am very appreciative of the good wishes of my Hartselle friends during my recent hospitalization and convalescence. I have felt more energetic today and prepared the feature for July 6.
July 6, 1956 -First Lt. and Mrs. Harold A. McClanahan, Jr., of Kempton, Germany, announce the adoption of a daughter whom they have named Martha Carolyn. Mrs. McClanahan will be remembered as the former Carolyn Stewart.
July 6, 1956 -Mr. and Mrs. Fuller Merrill and sons, Max and Tom, are currently vacationing at Wheeler State Park.
July 7, 1956 -Jimmy Day received a slight head concussion and bad bruises in a wreck involving his dad Modie Day's car and another vehicle at the intersection of Highways 33 and 36 this morning.
July 8, 1956 -Joy Broom and Judy Newman are at Skyline Ranch, Mentone, where they are members of the staff. Mike Roberts is on the staff of Camp Westmoreland, the Scout camp.
July 8, 1956 -The Morgan County Singing Convention held its summer session today at Ebenezeer church, east of Lacon. The new Vaughan, Stamps, and Stamps-Baxter books are all meeting an excellent response.
July 9, 1956 -Martha Lynn Roberts, Carolyn Block, Mary Orr, Tommy Ed Roberts, and Gary Vest began giving swimming classes at Recreation Park this morning. Their pupils are children six and over who want to learn how to swim.
July 9, 1956 -Folks needing repairs on their radios or TV sets are delighted that Jimmy Yarbrough's shop is once again open for business. Mr. Yarbrough and family have been on a well-deserved vacation recently.
July 10, 1956 -Wayne Summerford has moved to Baton Rouge, La., to accept employment as a chemical engineer with the Esso Standard Oil Company.
July 11, 1956 -Mr. and Mrs. Raymon Baker are currently in Atlanta for the Southeastern Gift and China Show.
July 12, 1956 -In the past 10 years the number of telephones in Hartselle has grown from 345 to 1,460-an increase of approximately 324 percent.
July 12, 1956 -Mrs. Cline Thompson, who recently underwent surgery, is now recovering at her home on Bethel Road. (Kathryn Isley Thompson Poole lived until November 22, 2003. She is fondly remembered for providing an excellent kindergarten and daycare service in Hartselle for four decades.)
