Somerville seeks grant for sewer

A delegation of Somerville officials made a trip to the nation's capital recently to seek support for a sewer project, according to Mayor Ray Long.
"We're trying to come up with $700,000 to install an eight-inch sewer main along Highway 67 from Somerville to Priceville's sanitary sewer system," Long said. "This would enable us to provide gravity flow sewage service to our residents.
"We have submitted a grant request for that amount and used our trip to Washington to promote its approval with Congressmen Robert Aderholt and Bud Cramer and the office staffs of Senators Richard Shelby and Jeff Sessions, Long said. "We were able to speak personally with Cramer and Aderholt and had an extended visit, including lunch, with Aderholt."
"I thought we made a good case for our need to have sewer service," Long said. "Everyone was attentive and gracious and we were told our request for assistance would be given careful consideration."
Making the trip with Long were council members Roger McClure, Jackie Teague, Darren Tucker and Bobbie Jackson and consulting engineer Larry Whitley.
Long said Ladd Environmental Group has prepared preliminary plans for the project.
