Hartselle School Board approved two school calendars for 2006-07 at its regular meeting at Hartselle Junior High School Monday night. One is for the usual 175 days and is similar to the one currently in use. The other is for 180 days. It will be implemented if a bill passed recently by the state legislature is signed into law by Governor Bob Riley.
Superintendent Dr. Mike Reed told the board he felt it was necessary to present two calendars for consideration since it is not certain at present whether state law will require students to attend school 175 or 180 days next school year.
In either case school would begin for teachers on August 7 and for students on August 10. The last day for students would be May 23.
The 175-day calendar provides for a fall break October 6 -9, a Christmas break December 20-Jan. 3 and a winter break February 16-19. The 180-day calendar eliminates the fall and winter breaks and reduces by one day the Christmas break.
The board also voted to extend Reed's contract for two years, effective until April 1, 2008.
In motioning for the extension Board Chairman Greg Cain commended Reed for providing strong direction and leadership in his first year on the job.
"I'm proud to have Dr. Reed in our school system," he said. "We have had a number of issues to deal with since he has been here and in every case he has handled them tactfully and professionally."
