Cain announces bid for probate judge

Greg Cain of Hartselle, a 15-year veteran of the Decatur Police Department, is seeking the Republican nomination for the office of Morgan County probate judge.
He planned to file qualification papers with the Morgan County Democratic Executive Committee after qualifying began Jan. 3 to officially become a candidate in the June 6, Republican Primary.
Cain, 39, is supervisor of the School Resource Officer Unit in Decatur, a position he has held since September 2003. Previously, he was a DARE and SRO officer for nine years and a patrolman for four years.
"I decided to run for the office when I learned that Probate Judge Bobby Day had reached mandatory retirement age and would not be a candidate for reelection for the 2006-2010 term," Cain stated. "I believe the office has been held to a high level of integrity and public service under his leadership and I want to see it continue in that direction.
"My goals are to have a responsive, friendly, service-oriented office, to expedite procedures within the scope of the law and to possibly expand hours and open a satellite office," he added.
Cain said he has received a lot of encouragement from voters both within and outside of his party after he let it be known several weeks ago he was thinking about running for probate judge.
"My campaign committee is organized and a campaign fund has been set up," Cain stated. "Now we're seeking campaign volunteers for each voting precinct in the county."
Cain has received numerous honors both locally and nationally for his administrative skills and leadership ability.
He was honored in 2005 as "School Resource Officer of the Year" by the National Association of School Resource Officers and was chosen as an "Outstanding Young Man of America" in 1996. The SRO unit he supervises was recognized as a NASRO Model School Resource Officer Unit in 2005.
As a grant writer Cain has been instrumental in obtaining federal funding for various drug and violence prevention programs in the Decatur School System.
Cain is pastor of Promise Land Church in Hartselle, a position he has held for the past nine years. He is also a member and chairman of Hartselle City School Board, a director of the Alabama Association of School Resource Officers-Region 1 and a board member of the Morgan County Children's Policy Council and the Morgan County District Attorney's ICE Committee. He holds memberships in Lodge 46 of the Fraternal Order of Police, National Association of School Resource Officers and is a Dixie Youth League softball coach.
He is a graduate of Cullman High School and holds a BS degree in criminal justice from Athens State University. He also is a graduate of Rhema Bible Training Center.
Cain and his wife, Cindy, have been married for 18 years and have lived in Hartselle for 11 years. They have two daughters, Grace, 13, and Hope, 7.
