Staff Sgt. Travis L. Nelson

Funeral for Staff Sgt. Travis L. Nelson, 41, a 1982 graduate of Cullman High School was noon Sunday, Dec. 18, at Cullman Heritage Funeral Home Chapel with Richie Thompson officiating and 2nd Lt. Mike Digby was in charge of the eulogy.
Burial was in Coldwater Baptist Church Cemetery at Oxford.
Staff Sgt. Nelson died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005, in Iraq. He served in the United States Army from 1982 to 1992 and won the Bronze Star during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. After leaving the Army, he worked in Cullman at the Wal-Mart Distribution Center. In 2001, Travis joined the National Guard, and following the attacks of Sept. 11, his unit was activated and sent to Huntsville and then to Anniston Army Depot. He re-enlisted into active duty on Sept. 28, 2004, and was assigned to the 101st Airborne division stationed in Fort Campbell, Ky. on Sept. 27, 2005, he left for Iraq.
Staff Sgt. Nelson was preceded in death by his stepfather, Fred C. Galin and his grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Houston Leeth.
He is survived by his wife Shelly Nelson of Anniston; a daughter, Summer Edgworth, of Anniston; his mother, Jeanice Galin of Cullman; two brothers, Mike Nelson and wife Beth of Cullman and Dr. Shawn Galin of Birmingham; a sister, Tammi Bramblett and husband Kyle of Cumming, Ga.; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Arlene and Steve Digby; brother-in-law, Mike Digby and wife Cassey of Anniston; two nieces, Bailee and Abby Nelson of Cullman; and three nephews, Micah and Jacob Digby of Anniston and Walker Bramblett of Cumming.
Staff. Sgt. Nelson was given full military honors and received the Purple Heart.
Pallbearers were military personnel.
