Tigers top Athens in key match

Lady Tigers win three straight
The Hartselle Tigers topped Athens on Monday night in a key 5A, Section 8 match which left the Tigers within one win of clinching a state playoff spot. Last Thursday they picked up another key section win over the Brewer Patriots, 6-2.
Hartselle 4, Athens 2
The Tigers improved to 4-1 in section play with an important road win over the Golden Eagles. Hartselle can clinch a state playoff berth by winning one of its final three section games.
Greenhaw scored two goals, while Nick Galloway and Patrick Whatley had one each. Whatley added an assist, while Weissenborn also recorded an assist, as well.
Brad Galloway recorded the win in goal. Hartselle improved to 5-5 overall.
Hartselle 6, Brewer 2
Aaron Burleson and Ian Greenhaw scored two goals each to lead the Tigers' offense. Jesse Phelps and Ray Canafax added one goal each. Nick Galloway and Stephan Weissenborn recorded one assist each.
Brad Galloway picked up the win in goal.
The win upped the Tigers record to 3-4 overall and 3-1 in section play.
On Saturday, the Tigers topped Albertville, 5-1, and fell to St. Bernard, 3-2.
Both games were non-section games.
After falling to the Cullman Lady Bearcats, the Hartselle Lady Tiger soccer team went on a three-game winning streak, but then fell to Athens Monday night to end the streak.
Cullman 5, Hartselle 4
The Lady Tigers trailed by four goals at halftime, but mounted a furious comeback in the second half, which fell one goal short. For Hartselle, Ashley Self scored three goals and Madison Lipsey had one.
Hartselle 4, Brewer 2
The Lady Tigers picked up their first sectional win of the season behind the strong play of Self and Lipsey. Self and Lipsey scored two goals each. In goal Jamie Smyth had eight saves to record the win.
Hartselle 5, Albertville 1
The Lady Tigers opened the scoring with four first-half goals and never were challenged as five players scored for Hartselle.
Lipsey, Self, Sandlin, Kathy Canafax all scored goals as the Lady Tigers won back-to-back games for the first time this season. Lipsey had two goals and Alex Hines added an assist.
Smyth had 10 second-half saves and finished with 12 saves to record the win in goal.
Hartselle 5, St. Bernard 1
The Lady Tigers scored two first-half goals to decide a game dominated start to finish by Hartselle. The performance was so dominant the ball remained in St. Bernard half of the field for more than 60 of the 80 minutes played.
In the opening half, Lipsey scored on an assist from Rachel Walker just 10 minutes into the match. Nine minutes later, Walker scored on a pass from Self.
In the second half, Lipsey added another goal, while Sandlin and Hines scored one goal each.
Self added another assist in the second half.
Smyth had three saves in the opening half and six more in the second as she won her third straight game in goal.
The Lady Tigers are now 3-5-2 overall.
