Edmond Eldon Debter

Funeral for Edmond Eldon Debter, 85, of Sheffield was Tuesday, April 5, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Sheffield with the Rev. Sam Hardie officiating and Morrison Funeral Home of Tuscumbia directing.
A graveside service followed at 3 p.m. at Cullman Cemetery.
Mr. Debter died Sunday, April 3, 2005, after a lengthy illness. He was born Feb. 18, 1920, in Cullman County. He graduated from Fairview High School in Cullman County in 1939. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp, and served as a photographer for intelligence officers in Iwo Jima. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1950. Later he served as executive director of the Monroeville Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber of Commerce in Shelbyville, Tenn. Mr. Debter was also executive director of the Muscle Shoals area Chamber of Commerce and worked with the City of Sheffield until his retirement.
He served two terms as president of the State Chamber of Commerce, was a charter member of the Alabama Mountain Lakes Association, a 15 year member of the Sheffield Kiwanis Club and a charter member of the Shoals Photographic Society. Mr. Debter was a member of the Sheffield First United Methodist Church and the Men's Bible Class.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Anne Bennett Debter of Sheffield; two daughters, Lucy Courington and husband Brandon of Birmingham, Dianne Debter of Huntsville; two sons, Ronald Debter and wife Leila of Birmingham, Charles Debter and wife Dawna of Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren, Ashley Debter, Andrew Debter, Addison Debter and Jade Courington.
Pallbearers were friends of the family. Honorary pallbearers were Quinton Musick, Ray Abzell, Dr. A.M. Christopher and members of the Men's Bible Class. Memorials may be made to Sheffield First United Methodist Church or the American Lung Association.
