It's been more than 20 years since Dr. Lee Hartsell took the helm of the city's school system. And now, as he readies for retirement, Hartselle's City Council is taking the opportunity to thank him for his work.
Hartsell was presented with a proclamation Tuesday night in recognition for his years as school superintendent. The proclamation recognized Hartsell for maintaining "a standard of excellence setting it apart from other school systems in the area and distinguishing it on a state-wide level."
Under Hartsell's leadership, the system has consistently posted some of the highest standardized testing scores in the state.
Much of the credit for that success should go to Hartsell, and he will be missed, council members said.
"I hate to see you go, but as time goes on, we all have to move on," Councilman Samie Wiley said. "I do appreciate all you've done."
Those feelings were echoed by Mayor Dwight Tankersley, who said his own children had benefitted from a Hartselle education.
"I want to thank you for what you've done," Tankersley said.
Hartsell started as the system's superintendent Aug. 1, 1984. His official retirement date is July 1, though he will use vacation time to take off before that date.
Councilman Bill Smelser said he hopes Hartsell enjoys his retirement as much he has.
"Being retired, I highly recommend it," Smelser said with a laugh.
