Seniors host picnic for politicians

Hartselle's senior citizens held an all-American event recently to prepare for the Aug. 24 election.
A Red, White and Blue Candidate Picnic was held July 23 at the home of Senior Circle Director Kathy White Goodwin giving Senior Circle members the opportunity to meet several local mayoral and council candidates.
The picnic was held under the shade trees at Goodwin's home and Susan Hines of the Hartselle Area Chamber of Commerce provided musical entertainment.
Hines reminded the audience Hartselle's Concerts in the Park series continues through Sept. 6.
Goodwin introduced each candidate and encouraged seniors not only to get out and vote, but also to voice their concerns to candidates while they had the opportunity.
"Two Hartselle City Council candidates, Don Hall and Bill Smelser, are official members of Hartselle's Senior Circle," Goodwin said.
"Mark Mizell has family who are members, as do other candidates. We thought this would be a nice, informal way for our Senior Circle to get to know all candidates, whether they are tied to Senior Circle or not."
Goodwin reminded members about continuing swim and exercises classes Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays with swim lessons at 2:30 p.m. and exercise at 3:30 p.m.
A luau will be held Thursday, Aug. 26 at 5:30 p.m. before the Hartselle High School football game.
Goodwin said Senior Circle is also planning to hold several community education courses this fall.
