Luther E. Roberts

Funeral for Luther E. Roberts, 88, of Hartselle was Saturday, July 10, at 11 a.m. First United Methodist Church of Hartselle with the Rev. Harold Thompson and Phillip Hines officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.
Burial was in Hartselle City Cemetery.
Mr. Roberts died Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at Summerford Nursing Home. He was born April 10, 1916, in Danville to Jasper Lyle Roberts and Caro Ione Tomlinson Roberts. He was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church in Hartselle. He owned and operated retail stores in Hartselle and Decatur. He served on the Hartselle City Council in the early 1950s, served as Morgan County representative to the State Legislature from 1952 to 1954, and was tax collector of Morgan County for a short time. He was the vice president and branch manager of the Hartselle Branch of First Federal Savings and Loan Bank (now known as Union Planters) and was on the board of directors for many years. He was a veteran of World War II where he served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Hewlett Roberts; three brothers, Horace Roberts, Guy Roberts and Joe Roberts; one sister, Nancy Hall; and one granddaughter, Kathy Weeks.
He is survived by his wife, Mabel G. (Tolliver) Roberts of Hartselle; two sons, Hewlett Roberts of Bera, Ky. and Tommy Ed Roberts of Hartselle; one daughter, Edna Carol Weeks of Hartselle; two stepsons, J.D. Williams of Charlotte, N.C. and Johnny R. Williams of Dallas, Tex.; one stepdaughter, Robin A. Stansell of Abilene, Tex.; three grandsons, Butch Roberts, Dr. Roy Brian Roberts and Andy Roberts; one granddaughter, Stacy Wade; four step grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
Pallbearers were grandsons and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers were previous officers of Union Planters Bank (formerly First Federal Bank).
